Design brief

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – also known as Doctors Without Borders – commissioned Digital Garden to redesign and redevelop their Medical Guidelines website and web app.

The guidelines are used ‘in the field’ by medical professionals working with patients in some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable: war, famine and natural or human-caused disaster zones. The design process involved creating a new UX flow for its multilingual users who work with colleagues from different regions of the world.

One of the big challenges to solve in the new solution was creating an Arabic language user experience – where the entire website needs to be ‘right-to-left’. The Arabic UX and user interface had to perfectly mirror that of the other languages, with the finest style details of the Arabic script display considered. The Arabic content lead at Médecins Sans Frontières was thrilled with the result Digital Garden designed and developed.

At a tap, the specific page of medical guidance the user is reading can be flipped between English, French, Spanish or Arabic – to help guide their colleagues in their native language. Alternatively, the entire site navigation and all available content can be switched into any of the four available languages

Other features of the project involved writing a migration script for porting content from Confluence into Drupal; CMS and text editor customisation to cater to medical-specific content. ‘Download as PDF’ and offline functionality for using the app in regions with low or no internet connectivity was also created.

Results

MSF and the team are extremely happy with the results. The platform is easy to use from both an admin level and from a frontend users perspective.
