Supporting healthcare in the field: the rebuilt MSF Medical Guidelines app

Digital Garden has launched the rebuilt MSF Medical Guidelines app, helping healthcare professionals access essential medical guidance wherever they are working—including places where internet access is limited or unavailable.
Médecins Sans Frontières provides emergency medical assistance to people affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, natural disasters and limited access to healthcare. Its teams frequently work in complex, resource-limited environments where reliable access to trusted medical information can be critical.
The MSF Medical Guidelines app supports this work by putting practical, evidence-based medical guidance directly into the hands of healthcare professionals in the field.
Building on a long-term partnership
Digital Garden originally designed and developed the MSF Medical Guidelines website and companion mobile app several years ago.
The Drupal website remains the central content platform for the guidelines and continues to be supported by our team. It enables MSF to manage and publish complex medical content across multiple languages from one central source.
For this latest project, the website was retained while the mobile app was completely rebuilt to provide a faster, more reliable and accessible experience.
Reliable access without an internet connection
Offline access was one of the most important requirements for the rebuild.
MSF teams may be working in locations where connectivity is limited, unreliable or unavailable. The new app allows users to download guidelines and access essential information without an active internet connection.
Users can manage downloaded content within the app, helping ensure the guidance they rely on remains available when and where it is needed.
A faster and more accessible mobile experience
The app was rebuilt using React Native, replacing the previous WebView-based approach with a more robust mobile architecture.
The rebuilt app provides:
- Faster performance and easier navigation.
- More reliable offline access to medical guidelines.
- Multilingual content support.
- Right-to-left layouts for Arabic content.
- Improved accessibility across supported devices.
- Integration with the existing Drupal website.
- A scalable foundation for future improvements.
One trusted source of medical content
The app retrieves its content from the existing MSF Medical Guidelines Drupal website through a REST API.
This allows MSF to manage its guidelines centrally while delivering the same trusted content through both the website and mobile app. Updates can be published from a single source, helping maintain consistency and accuracy across platforms.
Technology supporting an important purpose
This project is about much more than rebuilding an app. It is about helping make trusted medical knowledge available to the people delivering care in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
We are proud to continue our long-term partnership with MSF and to support its work through digital services designed to be useful, inclusive and dependable.
The rebuilt MSF Medical Guidelines app is now available for iOS and Android.
Download the app from the Apple App Store or get it on Google Play.
